Grandparents Day was established in 1978, when Congress agreed to recognize it officially. The day, observed on the first Sunday after Labor Day, was originally presented by Marian McQuade, a mother and grandmother herself.
Marian’s vision was one of family togetherness and legacy. She hoped that families would use the day to plan reunions and gatherings, so that elders could share wisdom and stories – and younger generations could show their appreciation and gratitude. The effort to keep the generations knitted together came as American families were more and more leaving behind the tradition of multi-generational living. It is in the spirit of love, gratitude and family that Casas Adobes Flowers Shop celebrates this month!
Here are some awesome facts about grandparents – no wonder we love them so much!
Grandparents Love The Job: A recent poll indicated that over 75% of grandparents said that having grandchildren was the single most fulfilling thing that had ever experienced. No wonder they spoil them so much!
Speaking of Spoiling: Grandparents spend $52 billion annually on gifts for their grandchildren, and also contribute $32 billion for their educational costs.
Grandparents are a Proud Bunch: Over 90% of grandparents admit to speaking about their grandchildren at least once a day, to anyone who will listen.
Grandparents are Integral: Although in recent decades the trend was away from multi-generational living, recent numbers indicate that as many as 40% of households now include a grandparent. Which is amazing, given their positive influence on families. Children who grow up with a loving grandparent are more confident and secure in themselves overall, and are more likely to be outgoing and take chances.
Although McQuade never intended the holiday to be a large commercial event, she did see it as a time to honor the older generation and let them know how loved and valued they are. Whether beautiful Grandparents Day bouquets for her, decorative green plants for him, or a delicious fruit basket for them both to share – Casas Adobes Flower Shop has a great online collection to choose from.
