Taking Care of Your Poinsettia Plant

The poinsettia is the popular star-shaped plant that has come to represent the spirit of the holiday. Originally found growing in Mexico, these beautiful flowers are the subject of several legends that describe their association with Christmas and the Christ child. The flowers exhibit vivid, festive colors from creamy white to vibrant scarlet, and at this time of the year, they are found everywhere from corporate lobbies to shopping malls and churches. Of course, a poinsettia plant is also a favorite piece of holiday decor in homes across Tucson and Oro Valley. For the most beautiful poinsettias, come to Casas Adobes Flower Shop!

Poinsettias bloom in December, another reason that they make the perfect seasonal plant. Here are a few tips to keep your poinsettia looking merry and bright throughout the whole season.

  • Place your poinsettia close to a sunny window, but do not let the leaves touch a cold window or they will wither.
  • Poinsettias thrive in temperatures between 65 and 75 degrees during the day, and a bit cooler at night.
  • Water the plant when the soil feels dry to the touch. It is important that the roots do not get soaked, so empty the pan or dish once the water drains.
  • It is normal for several leaves to turn yellow and drop off the plant when you first bring it home, as it is simply adapting to its’ new environment.

Are They Poisonous?

Though they have a bad reputation for being poisonous to cats and dogs, the poinsettia plant is merely mildly toxic to house pets. The plant’s milky white sap can cause vomiting or drooling, mild skin irritation of conjunctivitis, but these effects generally don’t require medical treatment. Due to the low level of toxicity associated with poinsettia ingestion, medical treatment is rarely necessary. Still, it is best to keep out of your pet’s reach and do take them to the vet if signs seem severe.
