Although more prevalent in the Northeast and Midwest, Sweetest Day has been continuously celebrated since 1916. It was established by a group of candy executives in Cleveland, who banded together to give away over 26,000 boxes of candy to orphans, shut-ins, and the needy. Blasted by cynics for being self-serving in trying to establish another holiday that would require people to buy lots of candy, the movement nevertheless grew – and today, remains as a day set aside to show kind and sweet gestures to those who may be struggling a bit.
October 21 is Sweetest Day, and is a wonderful opportunity to let someone know you love and support them. Casas Adobes Flower Shop has the flowers, gifts, and chocolates you’ll need.
Flowers have been proven to lift people’s spirits and elevate moods. If someone you know could use a bit of cheering up, we love the beauty of gerbera daisies, lilies, roses, alstroemeria, hydrangea, and mums. These bright blooms are sure to let them know that you support them and think they are just the sweetest!

We asked some friends to share their favorite acts of kindness for Sweetest Day, and here are some of their responses:
* Take a friend who feels alone out to lunch, and just listen.
* Leave a grocery gift card on the front door of someone struggling to find a job.
* Send a basket of home-baked cookies or brownies to first responders, or to the nurses desk at a hospital.
* Pick up flowers and hand-deliver them to an elderly neighbor.
In the end, Sweetest Day gives us a lovely excuse to simply let others know that they matter to us. No matter your choice of gift or gesture, acts of kindness are always the sweetest thing you can do.
